One idea. Many voices. One shared road.

FROM AN IDEA TO
THE STARTING LINE.

Runners moving together as a community in East Africa
The Relay of the Champions began with a question.

Every meaningful event begins somewhere. Sometimes it starts with a detailed plan, a budget and a calendar full of confirmed dates. Sometimes it begins much more quietly, with a single idea that absolutely refuses to disappear.

For the Relay of the Champions, the beginning sparked as a quiet idea in my head. It stayed there for months, growing steadily through conversations, questions and endless possibilities.

I kept returning to the exact same thought: what if running could become a bridge between athletes, communities and entire countries? What if the open road could bring people together in a way that felt significantly bigger than a standard race? That profound question became my very first step toward building the Relay of the Champions.

AN IDEA LOOKING FOR
A PLACE TO RUN.

At first, the relay existed purely as a vision. I did not yet have an event, a route, or a gathering of athletes. Instead, I had a feeling, a deep belief that something truly special could happen if we allowed runners to move forward united.

The idea continued to take shape in my mind over many months. I imagined the electric energy of a relay, the eager anticipation of each handover, and the deep connections that could emerge when athletes shared the same stretch of road.

I pictured people from entirely different places meeting through their mutual love of running. I knew they would discover that the sport could create conversations no border could ever stop. But an idea, no matter how exciting, remains only an idea until other people believe in it too. That realisation sparked the crucial next step, and I started talking.

LISTENING TO
THE ATHLETES.

Talking directly with athletes formed the most important part of bringing the Relay of the Champions to life. We shared countless conversations about running, teamwork, endurance, expectations and the true meaning of representing a community. These vital discussions helped turn an abstract vision into something beautifully grounded and real.

The athletes did not simply hear about the idea; they actively helped shape it. Their questions revealed the practical challenges we needed to consider, and their personal experiences brought vital honesty to the planning process. Their enthusiasm offered constant encouragement whenever the process felt uncertain.

Most importantly, their powerful voices reminded me that we had to build the event around the very people who would experience it out on the road. Every conversation added another rich layer to the relay, ensuring the idea no longer lived only in my head, but finally began to belong to a much wider group of people.

Every conversation moved the idea further down the road.

FROM CONVERSATION
TO COLLABORATION.

As the months passed, the Relay of the Champions transformed into a deeply collaborative effort. What began as one person’s quiet vision grew exponentially through the energy, experience and trust of many others.

The athletes helped reveal exactly what the relay could ultimately become. They showed me we could make it challenging without losing its core joy, celebrate individual strength while firmly placing teamwork at the centre, and create a welcoming space where runners from diverse backgrounds contributed to one shared journey rather than competing directly against one another.

That crucial distinction mattered immensely. I never intended the event to focus solely on who ran the fastest. Instead, I wanted to highlight the handover, mutual encouragement, shared responsibility and the clear understanding that every single runner carries the effort of the whole team. We built the relay on raw running ability, but anchored it firmly in genuine human connection.

THE POWER OF
A SHARED VISION.

A special moment arrives in any project when the original idea begins to feel genuinely possible. For the Relay of the Champions, that moment arrived gradually as our conversations became more detailed and athletes began to imagine themselves actively taking part.

Whenever someone offered a brilliant suggestion, asked a thoughtful question, or shared their genuine excitement about seeing the vision develop, each contribution made the event feel remarkably more real.

Planning an event of this nature demanded immense patience. We had to discuss ideas, adjust our plans, and discuss everything all over again. The dream needed to meet reality, and reality needed to leave plenty of room for the dream. We faced complex details to consider and tough challenges to solve, but we also felt a rapidly growing sense that the relay could become something deeply meaningful. The vision gained incredible momentum because of many conversations, not just one.

WHY
A RELAY?

A relay stands out as one of the most powerful forms of running because absolutely no one completes it alone. Every runner plays a vital role, and every section matters. The strongest athlete cannot possibly carry the entire journey alone, and the knowledge that someone else waits ready to take over makes the most difficult moments significantly easier.

That exact spirit forms the foundation behind the Relay of the Champions. The relay reflects core values like discipline, courage, trust and perseverance, while also adding community. It reminds us that progress does not always equal an individual achievement, because sometimes people create the greatest accomplishments when they combine their unique strengths.

The physical handover becomes a beautiful symbol of belief. One person’s effort becomes part of someone else’s journey, and the finish line belongs to everyone.

MAKING ROOM
FOR CONNECTION.

From the very beginning, I wanted the Relay of the Champions to create far more than just a fleeting sporting memory. I wanted it to forge lasting human connections where athletes could meet people they might never otherwise encounter.

I wanted local communities to watch proud runners pass through their surroundings, knowing different experiences, cultures and perspectives would blend together seamlessly along the route.

Running possesses a remarkable ability to break down vast distances. Out on the road, people may speak entirely different languages or come from completely different backgrounds, but they all understand the universal rhythm of effort, physical fatigue, verbal encouragement and the immense satisfaction of taking the next difficult step. That shared understanding quickly became one of the event’s greatest and most exciting possibilities.

THE ATHLETES
MADE IT REAL.

Although the relay began as a solitary idea, the athletes gave it a beating heartbeat. Their genuine willingness to listen, participate and completely believe in the vision transformed the event from a basic concept into a vibrant shared experience. Through their compelling stories and unique perspectives, the relay gained real character and true purpose.

They reminded me that participants measure the success of an event by what they feel while taking part, rather than how it looks from the outside. They feel the nervous energy before running, the loud encouragement from teammates, the heavy responsibility of the handover, and the immense pride of reaching the finish line together.

The athletes did not simply take part in the Relay of the Champions; they actually helped bring it into existence.

MORE THAN
THE FIRST EDITION.

Every first edition carries a remarkably special kind of energy. Excitement fills the air because something brand new is happening, but uncertainty also lingers because no one knows exactly what memories the team will create.

The Relay of the Champions began with that exact same mixture of bright hope and endless possibility, resulting directly from months of imagining, detailed planning and deep talking with athletes who willingly saw beyond the ordinary shape of a standard race.

I never meant for the first event to serve as the end of the idea. I designed it as the beginning of an ongoing conversation that can continue through future relays, exciting new partnerships, and even more athletes discovering the incredible power of running together. I truly hope the event will keep growing in both size and profound meaning.

THE STARTING LINE WAS
ONLY THE BEGINNING.

Looking back, I find it remarkable to think that the Relay of the Champions began as a quiet idea living solely in my head for months. Before we ever painted a starting line, we asked questions, shared conversations, and held a strong belief that it could actually happen.

Everyone who listened, contributed, encouraged and took part actively shaped the journey from a simple idea to a stunning reality. That fact highlights perhaps the most important lesson of the entire relay: one person alone rarely builds truly meaningful things.

They begin with a singular vision, but they roar to life through absolute trust, deep collaboration, and the courage of others to say they will help make it happen. The Relay of the Champions began as one small idea, but it became brilliantly real because many dedicated people chose to run with it.

I may have taken the first step in my own mind, but the journey now belongs completely to all of us who helped carry it forward.

The story does not end at the finish line.It continues with the next handover, the next athlete, and the next person who believes an idea can become extraordinary.

The Relay of the Champions came to life one conversation, one athlete, and one shared belief at a time.
